Main Campus Master Plan: Student Housing

Undergraduate Student Housing

The master plan calls for the construction of new undergraduate residences when IIT can identify the resources. One idea from the plan is to bring the residences into close proximity with the new campus center and the academic side of campus. The concept of residential colleges is also being explored. Meanwhile, the existing residences of the McCormick Student Village continue to be renovated as part of the university's annual capital maintenance plan.

Lohan and Associates has updated the IIT Master Plan and re-examining the type and location of new Residence Halls.

The new State Street Village designed by world-class architect Helmut Jahn, has been completed and is now being occupied by students.

Graduate Student Housing

The four-building graduate apartment complex was constructed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Mies van der Rohe designed three of the structures: Bailey, Cunningham and Carmen Halls. Skidmore Owings and Merrill designed the oldest, Gunsaulus Hall. While providing safe, convenient accommodations for graduate students and their families, these four apartment buildings require significant internal and external maintenance and updating.

After reviewing options for demolition and replacement of some of the graduate apartment buildings, as well as consideration of leasing the buildings to a private developer to accelerate the renovation process, IIT determined in 1997 to renovate the three Mies van der Rohe buildings as part of its annual capital maintenance plan. The process was started in summer 1998. So far, exterior concrete has been repaired and painted. Elevators have been replaced in some of the buildings.

As of Today

Window designs that will maintain the architectural integrity of the Mies graduate apartment buildings are currently under review.
Prototypes of new windows have been installed in Bailey Hall.

Sorority and Fraternity Housing

Currently, IIT has seven active fraternities and one sorority residing in the fraternity quadrangle south of the student residence halls. These residenes were constructed between 1958 and 1960 by the university. A dialog began in 1997 between the university and a number of fraternities regarding options for renovation and/or replacement of the structures. Lohan and Associates will be updating the IIT Main Campus Master Plan with regard to residences and will include the fraternities in this process.

Meanwhile, the organizations and their alumni continue to upgrade their facilities with ongoing maintenance repairs and improvements.
