Siegel
Hall was named in honor of David T. Siegel, 1925 graduate
of Lewis Institute and IIT trustee from 1943 until his
death in 1957.
One year before his death, Mr. Siegel
made a donation in support of a new electrical engineering
and physics building. He participated in the initial
groundbreaking, but the facility was not complete until
after his death, at which time the building was dedicated
to him.
The steel, brick and glass curtain walls,
show Mies's mastery of relating the plan with the facade.
The resulting variety -- all-glass bays, glass and brick
bays, and all-brick bays -- lends contrast and rhythm.
Siegel Hall houses the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department. The department focuses on groundbreaking
research in wireless and telecommunications technologies
as well as software innovation and medical engineering.
Siegel Hall is also home to IIT's Humanities Department
and numerous classrooms and labs for both undergraduate
and graduate students. Construction was completed on
the Grainger Power Electronics Laboratory. The new lab
was made possible through a $500,000 grant from the
Grainger Foundation.
