Perlstein
Hall, formerly the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering
Building, was renamed in honor of Anne Agazim Perlstein,
wife of IIT trustee Harris Perlstein. Perlstein graduated
from Armour Institute in 1914, was elected trustee in
1935, served as board chairman from 1967-71, was honorary
chairman in 1975 and was life trustee since 1977. He
was inducted into the IIT Hall of Fame in 1981. The
Anne Perlstein Memorial Fountain and landscaping for
Perlstein Hall were made possible through a grant by
Harris Perlstein.
The landscaping of the walkway west of
Perlstein Hall is executed in the manner Mies van der
Rohe envisioned for the entire campus. The native trees
were selected and placed by Alfred Caldwell, a student
and colleague of Mies who landscaped much of IIT's campus.
Perlstein's small interior courtyard makes it unique
among campus buildings.
The largest of the buildings within the
Mies Campus academic core, Perlstein Hall houses the
Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering
as well as administrative offices, including admissions,
alumni relations and the president's office.
